The fast buildup of skin cells is a characteristic of psoriasis, a persistent
autoimmune skin disorder. It causes the skin to become covered in thick, red, scaly areas. Plaques are bumps that may be itchy, uncomfortable, cracked, and sometimes bleed. Psoriasis may show up anywhere on the body, but the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back are most vulnerable. It is unclear what causes psoriasis, although it is thought to be a mix of genetics, environment, and an aberrant immune response.
